This series investigates the boundary between digital copies and synthetic creation. I utilize pre-existing digital images as a starting point, exploring the potential of artificial intelligence to generate an infinity of new versions – the so-called quasi-synthetic facsimiles. These synthetic copies of digital copies carry new visual noise through the interpretation of AI.

The second gesture is the mechanical reproduction of these images, creating new noise on the physical support of the canvas. By juxtaposing two of these creations, I seek to activate a visual dialogue that questions the conventions of interpretation. I believe that the union of seemingly disparate images can destabilize the gaze and generate new understandings within the context of painting.

This unexpected proximity seeks to reveal the complex dynamics of power and vulnerability that can underlie even the most trivial encounters, where the sacred and the profane brush against each other. This combination incites thought about the nature of this implied eternal existence: would it be a cycle of perpetual suffering or a transcendence of physicality? Does the aspect of the future clone suggest a repetition of this harsh existence or the aspiration to this idealized strength? The work explores these contrasting depictions of resilience, one forged in adversity and the other in idealization, to investigate ideas of identity and the possibilities of its continuation.

perpetual state of evolution and collapse reflects many of the changes and anxieties of the present. The union of a figure in fetish attire, suggesting something transgressive and perhaps sexualized, positioned next to an image of profound vulnerability – a fetal figure enveloped in a technological skin – illustrates the complex relationship between the supposedly sacred and the transgressor, the natural and the technologically mediated. This technological skin suggests both a protection and a desire to exist beyond purely biological existence. The fetal pose implies a return to the basic (primordial), a fragile state. The work seeks to raise reflections on the direction of this evolution and the fragility of the human form in an increasingly technological world, where the advance driven by technology, under the dominion of capitalism, does not always signify progress.

unraveling now seeks to explore the idea of disintegration through different representations of temporality and movement, investigating the diverse ways in which change manifests and the different rhythms at which it occurs. On one side, a body dissolves into arrows, suggesting a final dissolution, perhaps physical or spiritual, a sudden and perhaps irreversible event. On the other, a captured instant from Nam June Paik's "Merce by Merce by Paik," where an overlaid figure creates a sensation of multiple times or parallel realities, a continuous and gradual process. The work seeks to probe the transient nature of time and how "unraveling" manifests in different dimensions, from the individual experience to the collective.

the mindful hand juxtaposes the perspective of a focused and serene animal gaze, possibly a horse, with the violent action of a primitive man subduing a panther with a rudimentary weapon. This union leads us to reflect on agency and observation: what is the thought behind the hand that acts, and what is perceived by the eye that watches? The apparent mindfulness in the title adds complexity to this dynamic, suggesting a possible deliberation in both contemplation and violence, and their consequences.

In this body of work that comprises small paintings, then, the canvas configures itself as a space of collision between different visual realities, resulting in something entirely new. Through the combination of pre-existing digital images, which are then transformed through generative artificial intelligence before being fixed onto the canvas, the works address a range of contemporary ideas, such as the persistent influence of spirituality and its symbols in the modern world and the constant interplay between power and vulnerability, transformation and decay.

flying beyond the quantum field is a work constructed through the superimposition of layers, the result of image manipulation and laser print pigment transfer onto canvas. The process is completed with the application of a varnish layer and the installation of a 3000K LED light source on the back of the structure.

Drawing from appropriated digital images, the work explores the generation, via artificial intelligence, of new synthetic iterations – copies that carry with them the marks of the machine's interpretation. These synthetic renderings are then fixed onto the canvas through pigment transfer, a new act of reproduction that introduces further physical alterations to the image.

This mechanical and imperfect process leaves visible traces on the work, marking the surface with failures and scratches that contribute to its singularity. The grid, originating from the laser print paper, is an evident mark of the process. The final texture presents itself as a thin pigmented plastic film, constructing a stratified, almost epidermal surface, with scars.

The chromatic palette of the work is dark, the color of flesh, with vibrant streaks of green, blue, magenta, and white. The manifestation of these colors in the form of streaks suggests a movement on the surface, evoking the dragging of digital elements on a screen, creating a visual connection between the digital origin of the images and the physical result.

The warm-toned light, with its device concealed on the back of the canvas, assumes a fundamental role in the perception of the work. As it passes through the pigment layers, the irradiation of its energy reveals underlying elements, enriching the reading of the composition. Digital manipulation results in two images that orbit around human representation, possibly the same pair in different stages of an intimate interaction. However, this representation is marked by a visual instability: the figures appear to disintegrate, their forms fading like corrupted data. This imagetic fragility seems to echo the ephemerality of captured moments and the way memory can distort and erase the contours of experience.

Layers of amber-colored resin transform the surface of the canvases where the images reside. Accumulating organically in the center, the resin creates a focal point of greater density and lesser visibility, while its fluid edges blend with the image. This physical intervention, with its fluid and organic texture, not only partially obscures the representations but also acts as a subtle mirror, reflecting the viewer and inserting their presence into the visual dynamics of the work.

The 2024 series, in the end, it’s that we chose, grapples with humanity's yearning for a performative identity that transcends material time. The pairing of the stone's ancient lineage with the industrial coldness of steel and enamel; or the juxtaposition of steel and enamel against the texture of encaustic and the fluidity of oil, foreshadow a conversation about the body and technology, inviting interpretations of the decision its title suggests.

The first work, in the end, it’s that we chose nº 1 (2024), grounds itself in fragments of onyx, a natural material with a deep geological history, immediately introducing a temporal depth that surpasses the ephemerality of human life. Upon this stone rests an etched steel plaque, an age-old and artisanal technique used to imprint and immortalize portraits on memorial markers, rendered in an industrial, precise, and cold material. The image inscribed on this metallic surface employs a reticulated pattern (also known as halftone), a technique that transforms a continuous image into a discrete composition of dots. This reticulated image is filled with enamel.

The enamel-filled reticulated image presents a close-up of a face, a synthetic portrait generated by artificial intelligence and physically realized in the metal through acid etching that forms minuscule dots where the enamel ink accumulates. The face bears an intense expression: an open mouth in an act oscillating between piercing pain and rapturous ecstasy, intensified by the unsettling presence of metallic implants piercing the lips, reminiscent of sutures. The eyes, abstract and almost watery, deepen the sensation of vulnerability and suffering, or perhaps, of a transcendental experience.

The etched steel plaque serves as a fundamental material link between the works in the series, establishing a conceptual resonance through the use of this technique associated with memory and mourning. The reticulated image inscribed on this metallic surface presents the same face that will be seen in the other work.

In in the end, it’s that we chose nº 2 (2024), a synthetic portrait is etched onto a steel plaque that is overlaid with layers of encaustic and oil. Encaustic, with its roots in funerary art and the rituals of image preservation, particularly in ancient Egypt, introduces a strong connotation of attempting to fix something in time. However, the way the oil paint spreads and settles on this waxen layer suggests the opposite: a memory or an image fading away, leaving behind only vestiges and traces of its dissolution.

A new synthetic iteration of the same portrait is etched in the second work of the series. The most evident mutation lies in the mouth, which takes on an almost animalistic form, as if encased in a rigid, shell-like structure. This drastic alteration of something fundamentally human evokes a sense of strangeness and a loss of original identity, perhaps suggesting a failed attempt at containment or isolation.

The very duality present in the works – the memorial solidity of the steel plaque confronting the organic and synthetic mutations of the faces – illustrates the Foucauldian tension between the desire for a fixed identity and the reality of bodily materiality. As we contemplate the two works in the series in the end, it’s that we chose, a strong resonance emerges with Michel Foucault's thoughts on the notions of utopia and the body. The choice of the steel plaque as a fundamental support in both works directly relates to the human preoccupation with memory and the attempt to fix identity beyond mortality.

In his reflections, Foucault describes the cemetery and the tombstone as representations of a "utopia of the dead" – a geometric space where the body is figured as solid, geometric, and eternal. However, the deformations and intense expressions in these technological representations suggest the persistent "sad topology of the body," resisting digital idealization.
